Yesterday I was walking down University Ave. when three guys approached me and asked me if I was a student. I said yes and just thought they were going to ask me for directions. They did not ask me for directions. They asked me if I was a Christian.
As I was completely caught off guard, I said yes, and then all three of them with their southern accents told me they were from some Christian organization on campus and started drilling me with questions that made me super uncomfortable.
Guy #1: "Are you a part of a church organization right now?"
me: "Uhhh, no."
Guy #2: "Do you read the Bible?"
me: "Umm a long time ago I guess. When I was in Sunday School."
Guy #3: "Do you go to church regularly?"
me: "Um, no..."
Guy #1: "You, know it's a common problem among students not being able to make time to go to church..."
This is when I stopped listening. I was thinking, here these guys are, just trying to recruit people like any other student organization would do. They are passionate about their beliefs and they want to share them with other people. Except they are doing it in the freezing cold while it is flurrying like crazy. And, they were making me feel very guilty for something that no one should ever feel guilty about.
My quickest defense mechanism was to say that I couldn't chat any longer because I was working. I was sent from Wendt to go to the Historical Society, so I was legitimately working. Except I am sure the trio thought it was a ridiculous claim to say I was working, because who actually just walks around for their job? In their eyes that was probably the third time I had sinned in the last four minutes. They gave me a card with their website and I told them I would check it out later but knew I would toss it in the nearest garbage can (Sin #4).
As I was shaking their hands and just about to escape, one told me, "I'll pray for you!"
Icing on the cake.
